Over the years, Vogue has spoken to an array of actresses, models, musicians, and other famous faces about their beauty secrets and the advice they’ve picked up along the way. Here, we collate what they’ve told us about their skincare routines, from Susan Sarandon’s laid-back approach to Margot Robbie‘s love of deep cleansing and Clémence Poésy’s French pharmacy favorites.

“I always start by cleansing in the shower – I don’t do too many steps because I genuinely don’t have that much time, but I’m retentive about having really clean skin. Especially with my job, where they just layer makeup on and on and on. One brand I’m obsessed with right now is this brand Skin111, which my makeup artist Patti Dubroff got me hooked on. They have these sheet masks, they’re made out of a jelly sort of stuff and the serum they’re soaked in is so good. So when we’re getting ready for an event she’ll put one of those on while she’s doing my hair. At the moment at night I’m using a Dr. Lancer cleanser and a La Prairie moisturizer.”

“I’m not even just saying this – I know I’m a walking Dior commercial – but I love the Dior Hydra Life Lotion-To-Foam Fresh Cleanser, it’s the green one. It’s the perfect foamy face wash. So I use that and then I’ll moisturize with the Hydra Life Fresh Hydration Sorbet Crème because it’s really light – it feels like you have nothing on. My face is always so dry, so it sucks up all the moisture. Then if I’m doing proper hair and makeup I’ll use the Glow Better Fresh Jelly Mask first. It just kind of plumps your skin up and makes it super moist and sort of tightens it… I don’t know what it does or how, but it’s something incredible.”

“I like to moisturize my skin with an oil, morning and night. And I’ll do masks too, usually I’ll choose a clay mask, they’re really good. In my work I’ve also really learned how important it is to clean your skin before you go to bed. I’ve been using L’Oréal Paris’s Fine Flowers Cleansing Cream, which I love.”

“Every day I exfoliate because from the shows there’s a lot of makeup, sweat and dirt on my skin and just from being in a lot of different places – a lot of different airports – you have to really deeply clean your skin. So I exfoliate every day, and I use this honey moisturizer that I got. Then sometimes I’ll do face masks and clay masks and honey masks.”

“I always take my makeup off no matter how tired I am. Daily I use Tracie Martyn Amla Purifying Cleanser. It’s very fresh, gently scented and really deep cleans the face and neck. And it’s fast, no fuss. And I like using a good flat facial sponge to make sure it’s truly clean. I get quite dry skin so occasionally I use an old favorite of mine, Lancôme Toner Comfort, and then I slather up with Advanced Genefique Sensitive. This is my two-for-the-price-of-one product! It combines two serum concentrates with a vitamin E boost, all in one bottle. Shake, slather, done. It’s really hydrating and fresh and fast to use.”

“I think the most important thing is to always clean your face and ensure your makeup comes off at night. Going to bed with makeup is just so bad for your skin. So I’ll use a bi-phase cleanser to take it off properly, then I jump in the shower and cleanse with water. Then obviously moisturizer.”

“I like having a good moisturizer, especially at night, and cleaning your makeup off your face is the most important thing. I spent time in the L’Oréal laboratories and you get to see the differences in the anti-aging studies – you see it working right there in front of you and it’s amazing. And you think, why wouldn’t I do this 37 times a day? But that’s the hard part – you get excited and adopt a regime, but then you kind of forget it…”

“I’m obsessed with skincare. I used to just use wipes but since moving to London I’ve really noticed a change in my skin – probably the pollution. I really like Dermalogica and Sisley, and in the day I like to apply Charlotte Tilbury‘s Magic Cream before foundation because I think it creates a really good base – I can’t use foundation without it now. Then I love to put on Crème de la Mer before bed. I slather it on, I’m not a believer in a teaspoon-sized amount. I think skin is worth investing in – good skin makes you glow.”

“I had really bad skin until I was 24 and up until then I did everything under the sun to it. Then one day I thought I would try to leave it and that’s what suited it better. That’s also why I always want to wear as little makeup as possible when I am not working. When I’m filming, I always have a breakout as we have to cake the makeup on. I think it needs a break every now and again to be able to breathe. Since having a baby and being over 30, it’s also getting dry for the first time. That’s why I have started to use oils and moisturizers over the past few years.”

Susan Sarandon

“‘Regime’, like ‘skincare regime’ is one of those words which I haven’t really integrated into my life. Things that I do regularly are to put on my sunblock, keep my face clean, and use moisturizer. I’m starting to educate myself to the wide range of products L’Oréal has [since becoming a brand spokesperson]. I love the Age Perfect range, that’s the big one for me I think. You could stand a spoon in the moisturizer and it would stay upright it’s so thick, and you could practically eat it it’s so rich.”

“I am definitely into taking care of my skin. It’s very precious. It makes you feel confident when your skin is good, it gives you a boost and a glow. I used to be someone who would sleep in my makeup, especially when I was in high school before I graduated and I’d stay up doing homework so much that I’d forget. But I’ve really learned that my skin is so much better when I do. You have to take it off, you have to. It makes a huge difference. Day to day I use a lot of moisturizer and then sunscreen, because I’m very pale.”

Karlie Kloss

“Look, I’m all about skincare. It has taken a lot of trial and error to find what’s right. I never had a problem with my skin until I turned 20 – until then I don’t think I used more than lip balm! But then I started to get hormonal acne on my chin and T-zone. So now I have to work for it. It’s about really cleansing and exfoliating on a regular basis. And I’m a big fan of masks. Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Powerfoil mask is amazing – I’ve used it on so many airplanes. It has a serum in there that really kind of hydrates and the foil locks it in. So I use masks, a serum, and a cream. Oh and eye cream… I’m a sucker for just about anything. I’ve been to Seoul and Japan and it’s crazy there. I bought so many masks, and snail mucus and all these random things.”

“I am not really a products person but I’ve been wearing the same moisturizer for the last eight years – it’s La Roche-Posay’s Toleriane Fluid. I like it because it’s like water and it’s really good, plus I can’t wear moisturizer with fragrance in it and it doesn’t have that. I’ll wear any lip balm at night that’s free, came in a gift bag, from a travel bag… And I wear sunscreen, but I wear Neutrogena or Coppertone – just what’s available at the drugstore is what I wear.”

Kate Moss

“I don’t really have a regime, it’s the bare essentials! I use a face wash and then sometimes I use a serum but usually I go straight for the Decorté AQ Meliority Intensive Cream, and I’ll add a couple of drops of the Decorté Vitality Tincture too. It works. You really see the difference. I gave it to all the girls for Christmas and they loved it.”

Clémence Poésy

“Growing up in France I really love all of the classic pharmacy brands like Avène and La Roche-Posay. They’re really efficient and the kind of products dermatologists will tell you to use. I use a lot of French pharmacy suncare too – everything really works but is priced normally. The one thing I always pick up in a French pharmacy is Collosol No Rinse Cleansing and Softening Milk – it’s this miracle thing which is a brilliant makeup remover and toner, or you can put it in the bath, but it’s also good for putting on babies’ bums! It’s a really great product and it’s cheap.”

“My regime is pretty straightforward. I’m lucky that I have fairly good genes and my skin is pretty good, but I’m always careful to wash my face and cleanse it. I live in New York City and it’s so cold in the winter and so hot in the summer, plus I fly a lot, so my skin is and always has been more on the dry side. So I do a lot of moisturizing. I especially love the Blue Therapy range from Biotherm – there are great oils and creams and they’re super-rich. I kind of play around with little bits and pieces of the whole range. I do that in the morning and pretty much the same at night – there’s a great night cream in the range too.”

Chloë Sevigny

“I love this brand Tatcha, their products are my favorite. I’m obsessed. The cleanser, the polishing powder… Also in Japan I got one of those silver rollers, It’s really phallic looking with a silver ball on the end! So I roll that on my face all the time when I’m sitting around. It feels good, anyway. I’m also really into dry brushing before I get in the shower in the morning to wake me up and stimulate.”

Winnie Harlow

“I try to keep my skincare routine very simple and don’t put too much on my face. If I’ve been going out a lot, I like to do a lot of different face masks. For a daily cleanse, I use African Black Soap – it’s very pure and keeps my face clean. Afterwards, I tone with a mixture of water and tea tree oil. I try to make sure that everything I use is hypo-allergenic and natural. I love Eau Thermale Avène’s Skin Recovery Cream. It’s the only one I’ve used which doesn’t make me break me out and completely calms down my skin.”

“I really like the La Mer Cleansing Gel. Then Dior has a really gentle exfoliator – Instant Gentle Exfoliant – that I really love. I never used to use elixirs or anything like that, but Dior’s Prestige line has this Le Nectar De Nuit serum which is amazing, it has this incredible rose scent. My skin just loves that. Then I’ll end with a really great moisturizer. I like Dior’s L’Or De Vie La Crème moisturizer, or the Prestige La Crème. Then if it’s winter and really, really cold, I’ll use Crème De La Mer.”

Edie Campbell

“I use Avène because I think it’s quite light and gentle, it’s not perfumed or anything like that. And I don’t go in the sun, I’m not a tanner at all. In fact I’m quite scared of the sun, so it’s SPF50 all over. And when I’m really hungover I like to lie in my bed with a Korean sheet mask on my face.”

Britney Spears

“I like toners. I’m all about a good astringent toner before I put my moisturizer on. I can’t just put moisturizer on – I have breakouts because I work out. I don’t actually get zits or acne, I just get these red marks where it’s, like, about to break out and it shows up like a rash on the side of my face. So I like for it to feel like zingy clean with astringent. Then I like La Mer – I think it’s beautiful – but I haven’t found an astringent that goes with La Mer yet, actually. I usually use Elizabeth Arden astringent, or I use Neutrogena… I use a couple of different astringents actually. And I love to play with products too.”

Lily James

“I’m a big cleanse, tone and moisturize every night and morning kind of person. I take really good care of my skin actually and I love products, I love Kate Somerville, Liz Earle – stuff that feels really natural and light on your skin. I never sleep with my makeup on.  It’s a miracle sometimes, I don’t know how it happens. I like feeling like my skin can breathe.”

Maya Jama

“In the morning I use the Kiehl’s Cucumber Herbal Conditioning Cleanser, every day. Then I usually use Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream or sometimes I just use a Nivea cream. Like a standard one from Boots that I think does the job perfectly. At night I will use the same face wash as I do in the morning, then Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate or sometimes coconut oil, which isn’t great for the pores, but if you need the moisture…”

Candice Swanepoel

“Because I wear a lot of makeup for work it’s really important to keep my skin clean after work so I use a great natural face wash with tea tree oil and green tea. I use organic coconut oil to take my makeup off, I also add it to my smoothies to keep my skin glowing. It’s a great all-round natural beauty product. The main thing my mum taught me was that you can never be too young to start taking care of your skin. No matter how tired I am, I will never sleep in my makeup.”
